New to Cruising

Cruise holidays have never been more popular. For many people however, it's quite daunting to know where to begin. Will I enjoy it? Who is cruising for? Will I be bored? These are a few of the many questions asked by all first-time cruisers. The answer is simple. No matter what your lifestyle, aspirations or time of life, there is a cruise ship to suit your every requirement.

There are child-free and child-friendly ships to choose from, ships that range from the contemporary and innovative, to the traditional. So whether you are traveling with children, on your own, as a couple or in a group, you will find nowhere more welcoming. And we're here to ensure you find the cruise that's right for you.

Today you will find cruising has come a long way, with an ever-expanding range of modern superliners to choose from, some of which taking as many as 2000 plus passengers on board, and equipped with facilities such as an ice-skating rink and rock-climbing wall! So whether you seek adventure and excitement, or relaxation and sunshine, you can rest assured you'll receive the highest standards of service at value-for-money fares.

So what is there to do?

You get so much more than a traditional land-based holiday - luxury accommodation, exquisite cuisine and professional entertainment, together with ever-changing scenery. Wake up to a new destination almost every day, giving you the opportunity to explore new places, whether it's an exotic Island In the South Pacific, or the hustle and bustle of a cosmopolitan city. Life on board, however, is ultimately just as inviting as your time ashore. Most ships are equipped with swimming pools, a fitness room and spa, shops, stylish cafés and bars, and a whole programme of entertainment. For those of you seeking pure tranquility and relaxation, there are always plenty of areas on board designed with you in mind, whether it's a library, a quiet sundeck, or an adults only pool to name but a few.

Where and when do I eat?

All ships offer a main dining room, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, usually waiter service. Most ships do offer alternative dining areas, from self-service to silver service, A la Carte venues, and snack bars (often open 24 hours). Some of the larger vessels have as many as eight restaurants, ranging from Mediterranean cuisine to Japanese, from Steakhouses to Celebrity created restaurants.

Which type of cabin shall I choose?

Whichever cabin you choose it will be discreetly attended to by your cabin steward, so you'll always find it in shipshape condition. You'll return to find your bed turned down, fresh clean towels and a sparkling bathroom. You're often given the choice of comfortable twin or double beds and most cabins are equipped with dressing table and chairs, ample wardrobe space and tea and coffee making facilities. And that's the least you can expect. For a slight increase in fare you can enjoy panoramic sea views, or better still why not opt for a touch more luxury and take advantage of your own private balcony - an ideal place for breakfast or cocktails. If you're celebrating a special occasion or simply feeling a little indulgent you can choose from a range of opulent suites with additional space, a private balcony, a luxurious bathroom and special butler service.

What's included in the fare?

The fare is generally made up of your cabin accommodation and meals on a full board basis (although some alternative dining options carry a surcharge). Daytime entertainment is included, for example swimming pools, jacuzzis, gymnasium, sports court, and library to name but a few. By night these 'floating resorts' offer evening entertainment such as lavish stage shows, live bands, comedians, and night clubs. Most of the Cruises we offer are Cruise only, but some may have an airfare included, or we can simply book a flight for you and your party separately. Please let our Cruise Consultants know what you want to do at time of booking. In many cases transfers to and from the overseas airport/port are included, but not in all cases. Again please check when booking,

What about tipping?

It is customary, on the majority of ships, to offer tips to staff who you feel have given you excellent service and attention, as a way of saying 'Thank you'. Each ship varies the suggested amount but you will be given a guideline by the operator, either before you travel or in your cabin.

Is Cruising good for Families?

Undoubtedly. There is no greater adventure for children than sailing the high seas. We understand a family holiday is a time to be cherished and are confident a cruise will bring the whole family closer together whilst having the time of your lives!

Most ships offer comprehensive programmes for children aged 6 months through to 17 years, with an exciting range of fun and educational activities, all under the supervision of enthusiastic and fully qualified staff. Children are cared for in Kid's Clubs dependent upon their age, helping them to meet new friends. Younger children can paddle in splash pools and enjoy a dedicated soft play area where there are ball pools, toys and books, as well as taking part in singing, imaginative play, colouring and drawing, fun and games.

For slightly older children, they'll be invited to join in pool games, deck parties, treasure hunts, arts and crafts, and computer and video games. Not forgetting teens, who also get their own space, they can take part in shipboard Olympics, Murder mystery games, slumber parties, video games and film viewing. Some ships even offer their own teen night club. (For specific details see individual Cruise Operator's own website).

Meal times are stress-free, with most ships providing early dining options for families. You'll find familiar children's favourites, such as pizza, hot dogs, fish fingers plus healthier menus offering salad, vegetables, pasta and fruit. Enquire about unlimited drinks packages for children on board.

We understand mums and dads need a bit of quiet time too. Whether it's during the day whilst your children are in the capable hands of the kid's club, giving you the opportunity to relax in the spa or explore ashore, or of an evening when you wish to indulge in a romantic meal together or take in a show. With that in mind, night nurseries and baby-sitting services are also available on board most ships. For older children you usually find a late night supervised party zone.

Cabins are well equipped for families, with facilities such as a TV, telephone, drawer and wardrobe space, and tea and coffee making facilities all as standard. Many twin bedded cabins have additional beds, either upper berths which fold down (similar layout to bunk-beds), or in staterooms and suites there are sofa beds. For those of you looking for that little extra space and privacy there are a number of interconnecting cabins.

Holidays provide a valuable opportunity to spend some quality time together, so as well as the energetic activity programmes available on board, suitable shore excursions can be arranged such as aqua parks, horse riding and nature walks, assuring memorable moments for the entire family.

Is Cruising good for Solo Travelers?

Cruising alone doesn't have to be a costly or daunting experience. With an increasing number of single travelers, a cruise holiday is the perfect way to discover the world in a safe, friendly environment. It's also a great way to meet new friends and like-minded people too. Most Cruise lines provide activities early on in the cruise to welcome single travelers, such as meet and greet parties, gentleman dance hosts, and dedicated dining tables, giving you the chance to interact with others if you wish.

On board you'll find a range of social events are organised both during the daytime and evenings, but for those of you who'd prefer to relax and spend a little 'me' time, there's always a of choice of quiet areas to choose from.

You'll find that few ships have single cabins, but most ships offer a number of twin cabins for sole occupancy, usually at a supplement, although some itineraries do offer a nil supplement. We suggest you book early to take advantage of such offers as these prove very popular.

Evening dining is also an excellent time to get to know your fellow passengers, as on most ships you'll be seated with other solo travelers, so while you indulge in sumptuous cuisine, you can enjoy the company of your new traveling companions.

Organised shore excursions are also a safe and secure way to explore new destinations in a small group, with a professional guide. You can, however, feel free to take off and make your own adventures whilst in port if you'd prefer.

Many of the larger, more modern cruise lines, such as Princess and Royal Caribbean, offer a variety of fun activities onboard for you to be involved with.
